Understanding genetic factors can help keep cats alive longer
A current Basepaws research project is focused on finding genetic markers of feline longevity that can potentially be used in therapeutics development for prolonging life and promoting healthy ageing in cats. Feline life expectancy varies widely among cats, mainly depending on their breed and lifestyle. It is generally accepted, however, that cats become seniors around the age of 7 to 10 years old and ‘super seniors’ after 17 years of age (the equivalent of 88 human birthdays.)

Is your cat thriving in their 17th, 18th or 20th year of life? Congratulations! You have a very special feline super senior at your home! We are actively recruiting cats aged 17 years or older to partake in our longevity research study. If you have a super senior cat, they could be a perfect candidate for this study focused on discovering the genetic markers associated with longer feline lifespan and healthspan in domestic cats.
Pet parents of qualifying cats will be sent an oral swab kit and required to collect a DNA sample from their cat. They will then ship the sample back to the Basepaws lab using prepaid shipping. Additionally, they will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire and provide the cat’s medical records. All qualifying participants who are not current Basepaws customers will receive the company’s signature cat DNA report free of charge as a complimentary thank you for their contribution.
