Good To Know

One of my pet peeves when it comes to litter boxes is that many new litter boxes are designed to either make cleaning the litter box easier, or hide the litter box from view. Neither of these two reasons have anything to do with what cats want or need, and everything to do with human sensibilities.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve turned down a pitch to feature or review yet another “innovative” litter box.  When it comes to litter boxes, simple is better.

The best litter box is a large, open box.

We’ve used the NVR Miss Litter Box exclusively for almost ten years, and I still consider it one of the best litter boxes on the market. It solved our problem with Ruby, who, tiny as she was, was a vertical peer, and the NVR Miss was the only box high enough to contain things. Now that that’s sadly no longer an issue (and who ever thought I’d miss that part of little Miss Ruby!) I wanted to try the PetFusion Non-Stick Litter Box, a box I have had my eye on since it first came out a few years ago.

PetFusion Non-Stick Litter Box features

  • A non-stick pet-safe coating prevents cat litter from sticking to the bottom and sides of this box.
  • Made from a thicker plastic than standard litter boxes, this box is more durable.
  • A low entry makes this box a good option even for senior cats, but the higher sides help contain litter.
  • Generously sized at 22.6 x 18.1 x 8 inches, this box will be comfortable even for large cats.
  • The slightly curved design makes scooping and cleaning easier.

Putting the PetFusion Non-Stick Litter Box to the test

I was a little nervous about introducing a new litter box to Allegra. I generally don’t accept litter box or litter reviews because I’m not willing to risk litter box issues for the sake of a product review.

Allegra was immediately intrigued. She jumped right into the box to check things out. A couple of hours later, she used it for the first time. We use Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat litter, a hard clumping clay litter, and I was eager to test the non-stick portion of this box. And it’s like magic! No more scraping, the clumps loosen easily and leave nothing behind. I change the entire box once a month, and cleaning it was a breeze.

A generously sized, open litter box that’s easy to clean – what more could a cat and cat parent want!

A word of caution: make sure that you introduce any changes to your litter box gradually, whether it’s a new box, mat, or litter. The general advice for the number of litter boxes is one box for each cat plus one. I recommend that even single cat households have at least two boxes, especially if you’re in a multi-level home. Never change out all boxes at the same time.
