If you own a cat at home or thinking of bringing home a kitten, you’re going to want to cat proof your area and make sure the cat’s safe. The most important things we want to think about are making sure that your cats can’t get a hold of toxins and can’t get into unsafe areas of your home. Toxins that are commonly diagnosed in cats that can cause significant problems include medications and plant toxicities like Lilies.

While most people don’t think about those right off the top of their heads, they’re actually very important and many people keep them in their homes and yards. So, make sure to take a look at the list of toxic plants if you’re going to have your cat in and out of your home so that you know what your cat can get a hold of. You also want to make sure that you know where your cat can get in your home and in the back yard.

Some cats will hide in very small areas that are difficult to reach. The classic is an example of a cat that runs up a tree and gets stuck up there. While that doesn’t happen as often as one might think, cats getting stuck in ceilings and in walls and in little cubby holes that you might not even know exists. That happens everyday. So, take a good look around your home and yard from a cats eye view and see where your cat might be inclined to stick himself so that you don’t end up losing him accidentally and having to go find him and missing him in those cubby holes.

Another thing to consider is protecting your home from your cat. Two major ways that cats cause troubles in a house are scratching and urination or defecation outside the box. If your cats peeing or pooping outside of the box, make sure that box is clean and in an accessible area and if you want to protect your home from scratching, make sure to provide an appropriate scratching area and reward your cat for using it. That’s how you protect your cat and your home.
