When Allegra was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, one of the first things I asked my vet about was whether we should start her on AminAvast®.
The connection between hyperthyroidism and kidney disease
Hyperthyroidism can mask kidney disease because the excess thyroid hormone in the system increases renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. Glomeruli are tiny filters in the kidney that remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. Once the thyroid is regulated, and glomerular filtration decreases, BUN and creatinine values may increase. Several studies have shown a marked decline of renal function after treatment of hyperthyroidism. This has been documented with all treatments currently available. Approximately 30% of patients develop kidney disease after treatment of hyperthyroidism.
This is why I wanted Allegra on AminAvast® to protect her kidneys, and my vet agreed. “My anecdotal experience, reinforced by what I hear from colleagues, is that many cats with stage 2 and 3 chronic kidney disease seem to just do a bit better when on AminAvast,” says Dr. Tasi. “They have a better appetite, better coat quality, and better energy. I tell clients I don’t really know exactly what it is doing but I feel it is supportive of the kidneys.” Dr. Tasi thinks that it’s unlikely to reverse any changes already present. “In late stage 3 or stage 4 CKD I honestly don’t see it do very much,” she says, “but especially in stage 4. These cats are running on very little functional kidney tissue to even support.” Dr. Tasi has never seen an adverse reaction to AminAvast. “The worst case scenario is a cat won’t eat their food when the AminAvast is mixed in, and I do not want to turn any old cat off its food,” she says.

Dosing couldn’t be easier: you simply open the capsule and mix the flavorless powder in with your cat’s food. The recommended dose is 1 capsule twice a day for cats up to 10 pounds, 2 capsules twice a day for cats between 11 and 20 pounds. Dr. Tasi has a money saving tip for cat parents of larger cats: “For cats bigger than 12 pounds I think the dog size capsules AminAvast are way more economical.” She gives her own cat 1/2 of a dog capsule twice daily, versus 2 capsules of the cat version twice daily.
As with all supplements, please talk to your vet about whether AminAvast® is right for your cat.
AminAvast® is available from many veterinarians, and from Chewy.com and Amazon. I’ve found that Chewy usually has the better price.
