For a 4-year-old dog named Winnie, the best part of every day is when the USPS truck idles outside her house.
Nothing can stop Winnie from greeting her mailman — rain or snow, she sits by the mailbox, tail wagging. And their loving routine has been going on as long as Winnie’s mom Ellen Paul can remember.
“Winnie watches from a bed I put in the front bay window for him to come on the street,” Paul told The Dodo. “[She] knows when his truck is a few houses away on our side of the street, and if she is inside, she will start to pace and cry to let me know that she wants to be let outside to see him.”
As soon as Winnie gets out, she runs to the truck to receive her pets and a treat. The mailman is always happy to stop for Winnie — whether he has a package for her house or not.
The mailman knows how important his visits are to the dog, and always makes sure to leave a note in Paul’s mailbox letting her know if he’s taking a few days off. He also leaves some treats for Winnie to tide her over until they meet again.
“It’s a small but sweet gesture from him because he doesn’t want her to be disappointed,” Paul said. “But those days are definitely not her favorite!”
If Paul is at work when the mail is delivered, she will often find a treat for Winnie in her mailbox when she gets home. On those days, the mailman makes sure to give Winnie a little wave as she watches him from her perch at the window.
“Winnie loves the mailman because he genuinely loves her,” Paul said. “It really doesn’t matter if it’s a perfect day or pouring rain, he will always give her love if she is outside.”
Winnie loves people and the social pup makes sure to greet everyone when she goes for her walks. It’s almost as if she’s trying to make everyone feel as special as the mailman makes her feel.
“If anyone is in their driveway or on the sidewalk, Winnie will lay down and wait to see if they will say ‘Hello’ and come pet her,” Paul said. “She’s the ‘mayor’ of the neighborhood.”
But the love that Winnie has for her family and her mailman is impossible to top.
“She really loves that he takes the time [for her] every day,” Paul said. “They definitely have respect for each other and it’s such a unique bond.”
