Did you know that many commercial cleaning products can be extremely toxic, and even deadly, to your pets?  Cats are especially susceptible since they groom themselves by licking and as a result ingest anything that comes in contact with their feet or fur.

Dangers of toxic household cleaners

Many household cleaners contain contain toxic ingredients such as organic solvents and petroleum-based chemicals which can release volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) into your indoor air. Some ingredients in household cleaners are known to cause cancer in animals and are suspected human carcinogens. Inappropriate use, storage and disposal of these hazardous household substances may impact your personal health and the health of our environment.

Lysol, Pine-sol and other products containing phenols are deadly to cats as they can cause serious liver damage.  Clorox bleach, especially when concentrated, can cause chemical burns when it comes in contact with sensitive paws.

Toss the toxins

With all the naturally based and non-toxic cleaners available, there is absolutely no reason to continue to use unsafe products. Unfortunately, the problem with some of these products is that they just don’t work as well as their chemical cousins.

I’ve been on a  journey for the last two decades to find cleaning products that are non-toxic, and safe to use around cats. I also want my cleaning products to be fragrance free, because I’m extremely sensitive to scents. Maybe I was a cat in a former life? A cat’s sense of smell is far superior to that of humans. Cats have 45 to 200 million odor-sensitive cells in their noses compared to only five million in humans. A cat’s sense of smell is 14 times better than that of humans. Those facts alone are reason enough to avoid any products with a strong scent in homes shared with cats.

About Branch Basics

Of all the natural products I’ve tried over the years, Branch Basics is the clear winner. I started using their products about a year ago, and I won’t ever go back to anything else.

The concept is simple: One concentrate that does it all replaces dozens of toxic cleaners. You simply use different concentrations for different tasks: glass cleaner, all purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, laundry detergent, even foaming hand soap.

My experience with Branch Basics

All of the different concentrations work better than anything else I’ve ever used. The glass cleaner leaves absolutely no streaks. The all purpose cleaner works great for a whole variety of different cleaning needs. It even makes a fantastic spot cleaner for my white carpet for the rare time when Allegra urps something up. The bathroom cleaner leaves my sink, tub, shower and toilet sparkling clean. The laundry detergent is effective at getting stains out and leaves all my laundry nice and fresh without any artificial scents.

There’s a wealth of information on the Branch Basics website about the benefits of removing toxins from all aspects of your life, not just with cleaning. They are serious about their motto “toss the toxins.” The back story of how the company came to be is fascinating.

I encourage you to try Branch Basics for yourself. Your cats, and the humans in your home, will thank you.
