Cats have a reputation for being lazy and sleeping for much of the day. The average indoor cat sleeps 12 to 16 hours a day, which makes it even more important to provide plenty of opportunities for exercise during her waking hours. Exercise is nothing more than extended playtime, and it’s up to cat parents to make sure to provide that.
Most experts agree mature adult that cats need about 30 minutes of exercise a day. Kittens and young cats could benefit from one to two hours. If you have more than one kitten or younger cats, they’ll generally get plenty of exercise by playing, wrestling and chasing each other. Only cats and cats that are middle-aged may need encouragement to get moving.
Sally Bahner, a freelance write and publisher of the Exclusively Cats blog, recently wrote an article for Animal Wellness magazine about how to encourage your cat to exercise.
