Zen and the Art of Caring for Pets is both informative and profoundly moving. Part memoir, part pet care book, the book chronicles Dr. Kelleher’s experiences in veterinary medicine, from working in conventional and critical care practices to starting her own holistic practice.

She addresses the benefits of various holistic healing modalities, along with case stories and testimonials of the pets who have been helped by these treatments. This section of the book will be especially beneficial for readers with cats with chronic health issues. Dr. Kelleher often takes on cases that have already been through multiple rounds of conventional treatments without any success. She addresses the impact of over-vaccination and poor quality nutrition as a cause of many chronic diseases and offers solutions.

Dr. Kelleher also takes a hard look at the veterinary profession, from how technological advances changed veterinary medicine, to the ramifications of veterinarians dealing with compassion fatigue, almost daily life and death decisions for their patients, and the alarming increase of suicide rates among veterinarians.

Dr. Kelleher’s writing style is easily accessible and sincere, and even being familiar with the emotional challenges inherent in the veterinary profession, I found myself deeply moved by her candor and openness.

I highly recommend this book not just for those interested in how holistic modalities can benefit their own cats, but for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the challenges veterinarians and veterinary staff face every day. It may just make you view your own vet in a very different light and appreciate him or her even more.
