Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they need meat in their diet to thrive. Their systems aren’t designed to digest carbohydrates. A raw diet is one of the best ways to fulfill cats’ nutritional requirements, but raw food, even a commercially prepared raw diet, may exceed the comfort level for some cat parents. I don’t think it’s necessary to take an “all or nothing” stand when it comes to feline nutrition, but I do believe that it is important to feed our cats a diet that is as minimally processed as possible.

A minimally processed, gently cooked diet is a great option if you want to feed food that’s as fresh as possible, but aren’t comfortable feeding raw.

About Smalls

Smalls uses human-grade USDA certified ingredients that are humanely-harvested and sustainably-sourced from the US or Canada. Their products do not contain BPAs, preservatives, fillers, or mystery-ingredients. All Smalls meals are grain-free. They add veggies and a supplement mix for vitamins and minerals.

Smalls fresh meals come in three flavors: Smooth Bird (chicken), Other Bird (turkey and chicken liver) and Cow.

Smalls also offers a freeze dried raw food in chicken, turkey and duck flavors.

Smalls will design a customized meal plan for your cat when you order, taking into account your cat’s age, weight, neutered status, health issues, and body type to recommend the amount of food you’ll need to feed.

Putting Smalls to the test

Smalls is shipped frozen 11.5 ounce chubs, and feeding is as simple as thaw and serve. Our shipment even included a convenient plastic container to thaw the chub. It takes about 24 hours to thaw in the fridge. Once it’s thawed, simply cut one end of the casing and squeeze the food into the container. Scooping out meal sized portions is super easy. I’ve been vegetarian for a very long time, but the smell of the food reminded me of my mom’s chicken casserole dinners. It definitely smells like real food.

The texture of the food is very much like canned pate style foods.

I wish I could report that Allegra loved this food, but she just wasn’t very interested in it. She’s used to raw food, and while she eats an occasional canned meal, I guess this food is just too different from what she’s used to.
