EUSOH is a community health sharing plan that reimburses pet parents for veterinary expenses. Unlike traditional pet insurance, pet parents join groups and fund each other’s veterinary costs.
I’m a firm proponent of pet insurance. For me, the bottom line is that if you can’t afford an unexpected $1000 or $2000 for a medical emergency, or even more for a chronic serious illness, you owe it to yourself and your cats to consider options that will help you cover these expenses.
Last week, I interviewed Eusoh’s founder Dr. Allen Kamrava, a physician who became frustrated with the traditional model of the health insurance industry. He founded Eusoh to provide an alternative to traditional pet insurance. And in case you’re wondering, the name EUSOH is derived from the term “eusociality,” which is the highest level of social organization in nature, “an apt analogy to our system,” says Allen. (Sociality is the degree to which individuals in an animal population tend to associate in social groups and form cooperative societies, and “eu” is an ancient Greek word for true or genuine.)
How does Eusoh work?
Eusoh is a community based subscription service. Members pay a monthly fee instead of a premium. The average monthly fee for cats ranges from $30 to $35. Once you’re a member, you join a group of other members. You either join an existing group, or you can create your own group with family and friends. There is a 30 day waiting period once you join before you can submit your first reimbursement request.
Eusoh covers a wide range of healthcare expenses from any provider you choose. Some of the standard things that are covered include:
- Injuries
- Illnesses
- Annual Check-Ups
- Cancer
- Hereditary Conditions
- Congenital Conditions
- Surgeries
- Prescribed Medications
- Alternative Treatments
- Wellness Care
Costs are reimbursed up to 80% or for a maximum of $8,500 a year.
Eusoh does not cover pre-existing conditions. Ultimately, it’s up to the community members of each group to decide whether you can join, and pets with multiple pre-existing conditions might not be able to find a group that will accept them. If this happens, Eusoh will refund your initial deposit and membership fee.
My take on Eusoh
Eusoh’s business model works similar to the crowdfunding you’re probably already familiar with on platforms such as GoFundMe, Kickstarter or Indiegogo. I like the community aspect, and I like that the company has a wealth of information about how their program works available on their website. This transparency helps pet parents make informed decisions. Eusoh offers a 30-day 100% money back guarantee and pledges to work with you if you’re not satisfied with the service or coverage you get.
I believe that Eusoh is a viable alternative to pet insurance. As is the case with any financial matters, whether it’s a good fit for you and your cats will depend on your individual situation.
