I don’t keep track of the number of books I read each year, but my best guess is somewhere between 150 and 200, and at least half of them have something to do with cats. I review books here on The Conscious Cat on a regular basis .

I made a commitment to myself long ago that I would never post a bad book review. I feel that every author pours his or her heart and soul into a book, and just because I don’t like a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good book. As a result, if you see a book reviewed here on the site, it means that I really liked it.

Here are my picks for this year’s five best books, in no particular order.

An Incantation of Cats

The second book in Clea Simon’s Witch Cats of Cambridge series, which mixes mystery with a touch of the paranormal and a little romance, was just as irresistible as the first one. If you enjoy feline-centric mysteries, fantasy, and a touch of magic and romance, you will love this series.

The Book of PAWSOME:
Head Bonks, Raspy Tongues, and 101 Reasons Why Cats Make Us So, So Happy

From cats wiggling their butts before they pounce to seeing your cat sleeping in a sun puddle to bringing home a new toy that your cat will actually play with, this little book reminds us that even in a world turned upside down, cats will always give us a reason to smile. Interspersed with charming illustrations, this uplifting treasure of a book is a must have for cat lovers. At a time when there’s so much bad news everywhere, The Book of PAWSOME offers the purrfect respite from the outside world.

The Dalai Lama’s Cat and the Four Paws of Spiritual Success

The Dalai Lama’s cat is back with a fourth installment in David Michie’s popular series. Michie first introduced the fictional feline,  HHC (His Holiness’ Cat), dubbed “Little Snow Lion” by the Dalai Lama himself, in his 2012 novel The Dalai Lama’s Cat. HHC was rescued by the Dalai Lama when he saw the small kitten being thrown in the gutter. In this fourth book in the series, Michie explores the four key elements of Tibetan Buddhism from HHC’s purrpsective.

Fear on Four Paws

The seventh book in Clea Simon’s Pet Noir series featuring pet behaviorist and psychic Pru Marlowe is a well-written, fast-paced mystery, but it really shines in the portrayal of the animals. Simon provides enough back story so that this book can be read as a stand-alone, but why not treat yourself to the whole series?

P. S. I Love You More Than Tuna

This sympathy gift book for adults who are grieving the loss of a cat will help readers through their pain without being saccharine. It will heal through laughter as well as tears, and offer empathy without minimizing the reader’s pain or trying to “fix it.” This treasure of a book is like a warm hug from a caring friend who understands how much your cat meant to you.

P.S. I Love You More Than Tuna is available from Amazon.

Due to USPS shipping delays, calendars may not arrive until after January 1.

Even though gifts from our gift guide most likely won’t arrive in time for Christmas at this point, the exclusive discounts offered by many of the companies featured extend through December 31, so take another look so you don’t miss out!
