A Very Special Portrait from Pet Portrait Artist Alison Mayes

Good To Know

When pet portrait artist Alison Mayes contacted me and asked whether she could draw my beautiful Allegra in exchange for being featured on The Conscious Cat, I didn’t hesitate. After taking a look at some of Alison’s drawings in her Etsy shop, I knew that her style would suit my beautiful girl purrfectly.

Alison is an infant teacher (the UK equivalent of kindergarten) in Hertfordshire. She started drawing again during the sixmonth lock down period. “I have mainly been doing custom pet portraits, which I have really enjoyed.” she said. ” The opportunity to build a relationship with the owner and then to be able to create something that they like so much has become something that I really love to do”. Now that Alison’s two daughters are grown, she is beginning to focus on things she really loves. “I have cut my hours down at school and I am learning about illustration, with an aspiration of creating a children’s book,” she said.

Allison works primarily in pencil. “I use a huge range of different colors to capture the uniqueness of each special pet,” she explained. I emailed a photo of Allegra, and  she periodically sent me updates of her drawing to make sure I was happy with it.

I was absolutely blown away by the end result. Alison really captured Allegra’s personality and spirit.
