It’s no secret Britons love their cats, and a recent study reveals what British city takes the top honor of home to the most cat lovers in Britain.
But, that’s not all we’ve learned from a survey of 2,000 Britons regarding cats. Thanks to the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes, we’re learning more and more about how people really feel about felines. As cat lovers, we’re not surprised by some of these facts, but it’s nice to hear from the like-minded!

What British city loves cats best?
The port city of Plymouth took top honors for the most cat lovers in a British city. Fun fact about Plymouth: It’s where pilgrims boarded the Mayflower and set sail for America in 1620. Today, Plymouth boasts having a population that’s predominately cat people with 66.1% of residents reporting they love felines!
The city of Brighton came in as a close second with 66% of the population fawning over felines. As for the rest of the cities in the top ten, they’re English cities as well, meaning England is the place for cat lovers!

- Southampton – 59%

A Sad Fact
This study of 2000 people revealed something that makes the 2020 coronavirus pandemic ever harder to deal with. People were twice as likely to abandon cats during lockdown than dogs.
Rachel Andre, CEO of the sustainable cat litter firm, Natusan, said, “It’s sad to hear the nation’s cats have had a raw deal during lockdown, especially as we know there are a strong contingent of responsible cat lovers and pet parents around the country who go the extra mile in putting their felines first.”
More Facts Revealed
The Association of Dogs and Cats Homes study also revealed these facts:
- 17% of respondents identified as cat lovers versus 33% being dog lovers
- 31% of people say they love both cats and dogs while 17% care for neither
- 24% of the cat lovers said their cat was their best buddy
- 35% of cat lovers reported their felines help them through tough times
- 22% of cat parents said their cat understands them
- 23% of cat lovers feel their cats have a sense of loyalty that runs deeper than any human’s
Animal behaviorist, Professor Peter Neville, has seen a change in households when it comes to pets and applied to these survey results, there’s no mistaking cats are on the rise. He explains, “The number of cat pets has been growing faster than the rate of dogs over the last decade, proving cats may not be the ‘underdogs’ for much longer.”
