To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. ― Thomas Campbell
Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a day when we honor the memory of the men and women who have died in military service. We also celebrate the arrival of summer, but because of the reason for the holiday, it never feels right to me to say “Happy Memorial Day,” so instead, I’m wishing you a day filled with love and beautiful memories.
This year, we also remember the nearly 100,000 who succumbed to this awful virus over the last three months.
It seems almost impossible to find anything to celebrate in the middle of so much sadness and fear. Perhaps it helps to remember that joy and grief don’t have to be mutually exclusive – and make no mistake, what we’ve all been feeling over the last couple of months is most definitely a form of grief. But even if you may have to look a little harder right now, there are still plenty of things that will bring a feeling of joy, even if it’s something as ordinary as watching your cat sleep in a sun puddle.
